Novit

Android · Gmail, Outlook, any IMAP mailbox

Email sorted by who is waiting on you.

Novit splits your mailbox four ways: replies you owe, replies you are owed, the orders and invoices hiding in your mail, and the newsletters. It runs on your phone. There is no account to make and no server to trust.

01The sort

Every card tells you why it is there.

Novit does not guess. It looks at who wrote last, what the list headers say, and the words in the message itself. The same mail lands in the same place every time, and any card will show you its reasons.

  1. Sarah ChenRe: Pilot agreement v3 — a few redlinesNeedsShe wrote last, and you are in the thread
  2. GoogleYour verification codeNeedsA one-time code. Gone in 15 minutes
  3. Northline FreightInvoice INV-2214 — due 4 SeptemberThingsAn unpaid invoice, so it is in Needs too
  4. AmazonYour order has shippedThingsAn order, #38291, arriving Friday
  5. Dense DiscoveryIssue 312 — The quiet return of the small webFeedIts list headers say bulk mail
  6. You → Tom Whitcombeterm sheet questionsWaitingYou wrote last, and you asked a question

02The tabs

People first. Everything else waits.

Five tabs, and each one answers a different question. Nothing is hidden. The Inbox is still there in full, underneath the cards.

NeedsWhat is waiting on youReplies from people you follow, unpaid invoices, one-time codes, security alerts. Swipe to clear one or snooze it until tomorrow.
WaitingWhat you are waiting onYou sent the last message and nobody has replied. At a week old it turns red.
ThingsOrders, invoices, bookingsPulled out of the mail that announced them, tracking link and all, so you are not searching for “shipped”.
FeedNewsletters, out of the wayBulk mail gets its own tab and reads like a feed. It never counts as needing you.

03Privacy

Your mail goes to your provider. That is the whole list.

Read the privacy policy

  • 0Novit serversThe app talks to Gmail, Outlook or your own mail server over IMAP and SMTP. There is nothing in the middle to break into.
  • 0Language modelsThe sorting is arithmetic on headers, dates and a list of words. No model is involved, and nothing trains on your mail.
  • 0Trackers or adsNo account, no analytics, no ad SDK, no crash reporter. Sign-in tokens stay in the Android Keystore.

04Google account access

How Novit uses your Google account

Add a Gmail account with “Sign in with Google” and Novit asks for one permission: full access to your mailbox, the https://mail.google.com/ scope. It asks for that because it is the only scope Gmail’s IMAP and SMTP servers accept. Novit uses it to:

  • read your mail and folders, so it can show and sort them on your phone;
  • mark messages read, and archive or delete them when you ask;
  • send the messages you write and save your drafts.

The connection runs from your phone to Google and back. Your mail stays on the device, and so does the token Google issues, held in the Android Keystore. Neither one is sent to us. There is nowhere to send it: Novit has no server, no account and no analytics, and nothing about you is sold or shared.

Novit’s use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Change your mind and you can revoke Novit in your Google Account settings, or just remove the account in the app. The privacy policy spells all of this out in full, and the terms of use cover the rest.
